Main Constraints of Aquaculture in Morocco
In Morocco, marine fish represent 50.8 percent of the total landings, followed by freshwater fish which represent 24 percent [...]. Marine aquaculture is mainly based on farming the Gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and the Europeans seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax).
Aquaculture in Morocco started in the 1950s and was largely based on the culture of oysters in one of the large lagoons along the Atlantic Ocean coast. The total production increased from 1 463 tonnes (1994) to 2 793 tonnes (1999), and then decreased to 1 538 tonnes in 2003 and 1 698 in 2004. This production represents only 0.19 percent of the total fisheries production.
