The Common Fund for Commodities is an intergovernmental funding institution specialising in commodity focused projects involving private sector companies. In the fisheries sector, such CFC funded projects are often carried out by the FISHINFONETWORK under the technical supervision of FAO.
All projects focus on post-harvest aspects and involve products from both aquaculture and capture fisheries.
One recent project is the one operated by INFOPESCA: Enhancing market access of Amazonian Aquaculture and Fisheries products, currently being implemented in Colombia, Brazil and Peru. It aims to increase the quality and safety of products based on local species and assists local producers in exploring regional markets.
A second project is the recently concluded Organic Aquaculture in Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. It aims to facilitate greater market access for exports of organic aquaculture products by promoting organic farming and processing practices. Building capacity and sharing experience across borders in the region are key elements.
The project has achieved encouraging results after 3 years of operation with the participating companies certified as compliant with organic certification standards. Organic live tilapia and black tiger shrimp from the project have become appreciated in domestic and regional markets.
FAO projects in cooperation with CFC and the project executing agencies provide valuable experience on post-harvest issues. Although each project is relatively small in size, the regional impact in terms of shared experience may be significant.
