Filipino canned and preserved tuna is continuing to make inroads in European markets, with half-year customs figures confirming the trend evident from last year. There was a 45% increase in exports from the Philippines in 2009 with a major increase in sales to Germany - up 36%. [cont.]

January 2010 - LATEST TRENDS

The Christmas and year end season were influenced by the economic crisis. There was a marked preference for eating at home rather than out. Consumers’ choice for home cooking included higher priced seafood items, such as lobster, most likely for use in special meals celebrating the season’s events. As a result, demand for seafood was strong at the retail level, while restaurant demand was rather sluggish.
