Total catch of the 5 main tuna species expanded quite strongly between 1986-2003: from 2.5 million MT to 4.3 million MT. In the year 2004, various problems led total catch to decline by 4% to 4.1 million MT. 2005 is expected to have seen a further reduction in tuna catches, to just ahead of 4 million MT.
