OBJECTIVES
- to contribute to the development and modernization of the fisheries sector of Africa;
- to contribute to more balanced supplies of fishery products to the Contracting parties;
- to make the best use of export opportunities within and outside Africa;
- to promote technical and economic cooperation among contracting parties.
ACTIVITIES
- Market research aimed at developing trade and trade opportunities. Its computerized system makes it possible to bring together importers and exporters, worldwide. This facility is enhanced by the numerous personal trade contacts maintained by INFOPECHE staff. INFOPECHE also benefits from the range of information gathered by the other members of the FISH INFOnetwork. This information is used in trade publications making up the "Full Net", and in particular in the fortnightly INFOPECHE Trade News. Emphasis is put on intra-regional fish trade and, more recently, on artisanal fish marketing.
- Technical Advice Studies on all technical aspects of the industry. This includes: chilling, freezing, handling, packaging, transportation and distribution. Realizing the special skills required in these areas, INFOPECHE is always in a position to find the necessary expertise, being a member of a highly professional network. The close cooperation between INFOPECHE and the FAO global quality assurance program is underscored in this regard.
- Organization of Workshops. Over the last ten years, INFOPECHE has organized and participated in several workshops and training programs relating to fish technology and quality assurance all over Africa. The International Fisheries Conference on Small Pelagics and Hake, Cape Town '95 and the Second Buyers and Sellers Meeting (Douala '96) were organized by INFOPECHE. Proceedings as well as list of exporters from Africa are available upon order.
- Documentation/Research The INFOPECHE documentation center covers all technical aspects of fisheries and the marketing of fishery products. It is stocked with publications from FAO and technical institutions worldwide. It is updated on an ongoing basis. This center has been used extensively by a number of international Consultants working on fisheries and African economic development in general. Additionally, INFOPECHE is in postal and computerized contact with major African and world libraries dealing with fisheries and fishery products. This permits very complete bibliographical searches.
